Monster Mayhem Brings the P.A.I.N.
by
Mr. Robert Jackson
For four years...Monster Mayhem sat on the sidelines of professional wrestling, missing the art he crafted since 1998. And in that four years, things did not look so well for him. In 2009, Mayhem had to have lung surgery to remove "stuff" from his right lung that was to thick to drain with chest tubes. While recovering from that suergery, Mayhem threw his back out...causing the road to recovery to last longer. Then in 2011, Mayhem received a tracheostomy due to sleep apnea. But today, in the words of Mayhem, "I am fully healed and no part of my lung was removed."
And now, Mayhem has been involved in wrestling for some sort of capacity for 17 years (13 years as an active wrestler). Originally trained by The Navajo Warrior, Derek Neidkirk, Mike Knox, Luther Reigns, Matt Starr, C.C. Starr, Gabriel Gallo in Arizona, it was back in New York where Mayhem's decision was made to become a wrestler. As a fan growing up & on the wrestling team in high school, Mayhem would help out with a local promotion in New York. "I did security for an indy promotion in Upstate, NY and wanted to wrestle and everyone said that I have a good look for a wrestler. People would always mistake me for Primetime Brian Lee in ECW/Chainz WWE," states Mayhem.
It was that same indy promotion that Mayhem would actually cross paths with Brian Lee, as he dis security for Lee. But Western States Wrestling is where Mayhem would get his big break in wrestling as part of the stable Evilution, where Monster Mayhem was born. "I created Monster Mayhem because I am a large Monster type guy with long hair and tattoos. I have always been called 'Monster'," is how Mayhem describes the birth of his name.
As Evilution, Mayhem ruled with his partners in Western States Wrestling against anybody who came into contact with them. Nobody was safe. Not CC Starr, not Luthor Reigns (Hoseshu at the time), & not even John Cena. Mayhem had this to say about Evilution, "Evil-ution was great. Working with guys like Matt Starr, C.C. Starr, Sinn, The Crock, And Strangler Steve was like a finely tuned machine firing on all cylinders. We were the first faction in WSW."
Mayhem also added, "The Crock and I interfered in a match where John Cena (the Prototype) was the special ring enforcer for WSW. John Cena threw me back through the curtains where we came from after giving me a few shots."
From Western States Wrestling, Mayhem decided to come up with a new look. A preacher by the name of Father Punishment. Why the sudden change? Mayhem looks back at it, "C.C. Starr approached me with the Father Punishment gimmick of a preacher that is set on bringing his type of justice, punishment, aggression and pain to all the sinners. I think it was 2006."
Eventually, Father Punishment would start working with a new faction in Impact Zone Wrestling lead by the recently unmasked Flood, now known as Lehi David Smith. Smith, Punishment, & Sister Destiny would not only do everything in their power to spread the world of the Good Book, but chase after the IZW Tag Team Championships. "With LDS, it was more of a mis-mashed religion with Mormon and FP’s pain religion and it worked for a little bit," states Mayhem.
Mayhem adds, "With Father Punishment, I get to serve my own form of Pain, through a made up religion that only he sees and understands."
Mayhem also added that he can't decide which gimmick he likes better. "It’s a toss up really. With both I get to amp up both characters to as high as I can. With Monster Mayhem, I am more of a biker type. Bad Ass, mean SOB that doesn’t care what or who gets hurt."
Of course, the road was paved with problems as discussed earlier. Psychical problems ailed Mayhem but he refused to allow that to stop him from getting back to the ring. During Mayhem's time out, he was ring side for some matches as a manager while working on the road to recovery. "I went to a new chiropractor and he was able to adjust me to where I had no pain what so ever. I started going to the gym, lifting weights. and doing cardio by hiking, treadmill. I had tried just about everything to relieve the pain such as 3 physical therapist, 3 chiropractors, yoga, massage, heat, ice, Jacuzzi/pool, shots, pain meds. All did nothing except last chiropractor," spoke Mayhem.
Then, the time came. Mayhem was ready to return to the ring, this time with Yetti & Orge by his side aka Creature Feature. Mentally, Mayhem was ready. Pyshcically? "I was just happy to be back. I had missed everything and all the workers I had worked with. I was hoping I was actually ready to return," answered Mayhem.
Mostly working lucha shows as well as High Impact Wrestling & Arizona Wrestling Federation, Mayhem proved no ring rust at all. Eventually winning the HIW tag team championships from Hardcore Union in a 3 way watch, Creature Feature invoked the "Freebird Clause" in defending the tag belts. And that clause would continue to hold until their recently loss to Flasteca & losing the tag titles. That doesn't stop Creature Feature from teaming up though, as Mayhem compares tag wrestling to singles, "I like Tag Teams better. With tag teams you can bounce ideas off each other. Work on promos."
Mayhem adds about his Creature Feature work, "With Creature Feature, I am having a lot of fun working with yetty and Ogre. We Mesh well as a tag team. With yetty and I, we finish each others sentence. Its kinda scary. We think a like. With Ogre, he is just open to doing whatever. He goes with the flow and is very easy to get along with."
Mayhem also added, "I love all the stables I was a part of. I got to work with different styles and workers and I learned a lot. Evil-ution was more of a learning time for me and taking in all the training and taking bumbs and working on a gimmick."
In that 17 years of wrestling, Mayhem has done so much & gathered a huge following with the fans. Not afraid to get in there & do what needs to be done, Mayhem feels there is no backing down as he reflects on his past compared to today, "I still work with a few guys that I started with. I am more confident now than I was when I started, and I try to keep it old school style wrestling. When I started, I was thinking that ohh this is gonna hurt and now my mind set is well no one is going to hurt me in the ring more than a Mike Knox elbow drop…and its true. Unless Rouge Roberts messes up an over the top rope leg drop and lands his entire butt on your face…"
As for the future? Mayhem has no plans of stopping, "The future…looking into my crystal ball….I see Creature Feature evolving into more than just a tag team. More like a close knit family of brothers. Myself I have a lot of more Mayhem to bring and a whole lot of P.A.I.N……"
